BANCROFT, Valerie Mary of Halifax passed away March 12, 2024, in the Dartmouth General Hospital at age 93. Born in Shelburne, she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Marjorie (Bachmann) MacKay. She trained as a lab technician in Halifax and worked at Roseway Hospital in Shelburne until she married in 1951. After her children were grown, she worked at Birks Jewellery Store in Halifax.
Val served as an elder of Bethany United Church and was an active member of the United Church Women (UCW) Rackham Unit. She had varied interests and over the years belonged to an Investment Club, IODE (Independent Order Daughters of the Empire), Readers Club, Gyrettes (International Charitable Organization) and Engineers’ Wives. Many hours of research resulted in her obtaining her UEL (United Empire Loyalists) certificate.
Val was a proud and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and she valued many friendships. She is survived by her children, Peggy Fougere (Bill), Hubley; David Bancroft (Tracy Dobson and children, Megan and Jeffrey Meagher), Prospect and Gale Côté (Richard), Cochrane, AB. Grandchildren; David (Lauren), Squamish, BC; Gregory (Katie Blanksma), Nelson, BC; Valerie, Windsor, ON and Noelle (Liam Hopkins), Calgary, AB.
Nieces, Leslie Cruikshank (Larry), Susan Joss, and Cathy Joss (Greg MacFarlane). Niece-in-law Brenda Bancroft, Yellowknife, NWT; nephew Colin Bancroft (Shelley), St. Margaret’s. Bay; great nephews Britt Bancroft (Ashley West-Pratt), Yellowknife, NWT; James Bancroft (Jill), Yellowknife, NWT; Cory Bancroft (Elaine Bourgeois), Enfield, NS; great, great nephews Holden and Atlas Bancroft.
Val was predeceased by her husband William (Brit) Bancroft, her sister Elaine Bancroft, brother-in-law Douglas Bancroft and their son Leslie Bancroft.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 23 at Snow’s Funeral Home on Lacewood Drive from 5 – 7:30 pm. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, March 24 in Bethany United Church, Clinton Avenue, Halifax, with reception to follow. Committal service will take place at 1 pm, Monday, March 25 in Pine Grove Cemetery in Shelburne.
The family would like to thank Jennifer Ruelland and the caregivers of Always Home, along with Sharon Evans. Thank you to Dr. Franklyn Vincent of Halifax and Dr. Richard Côté of Cochrane for the many years of attention and excellent care.
