Velva June Mansour 90, Halifax passed away peacefully at the QEII Health Sciences Centre on April 6th, 2022. Born September 23, 1931 in Scotch Village, Nova Scotia, Vel was the daughter of the late Daniel and Stella Sanderson. She was a devoted wife and mother, independent of spirit and caring in nature, with a dry sense of humour. She loved the outdoors and the poetry of her youth. Her career as a secretary and administrative assistant spanned a number of organizations, including Maritime Tel and Tel, the federal government and later, Sears. She enjoyed the people she met and valued the contributions she made. Vel enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life including walking, bowling, lawn bowling, golf and bridge and she loved reading and music. Her love and presence will be greatly missed by her family.
Vel is survived by her husband of 66 years, Joseph, daughter Susan (Glenn Blowe), brother Garth Sanderson (Alice), grandchildren Matthew and Michael (Alanna), 4 great grandchildren and a number of loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, parents-in-law Nohra and Gladys Mansour, brother John Sanderson and sister-in-law Audrey, sister Genevieve Smith and brother-in-law George, niece Marion Smith, and brother and sister-in-law Ron and Helen Mansour.
We take comfort in Vel’s love of this verse from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem “Crossing the Bar”: “Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark”.
Private family burial will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Northwood, VON Halifax, the QEII or a charity of choice. The family would like to thank all the home care workers who supported her at home over the last years, her care coordinators who enabled the home support, all the staff at the QEII Memory Clinic, especially Dr. Chris MacKnight and Catherine-Anne Murray, and the staff of Caritas Residence and 7.2 at the Halifax Infirmary, QEII for their care.
