Ventris Edward Gray

July 25, 1936January 6, 2021

Ventris (Vennie) Edward Gray, age 84 passed away peacefully on January 6th at the Victoria General Hospital due to a blood disorder. Born in Halifax he was a son of the late Ventris and Viola (Stewart) Gray. Vennie worked for Himmelman Contractors (formerly Halifax Heating and Air Conditioning) as an estimator. He was a member of the Timberlea and area Lions Club and was always the secretary. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, hockey, football and golf. Vennie was a diehard Toronto Maple Leafs fan and a Toronto Blue Jays fan, but only when they were winning. The New England Patriots were his favorite NFL team. He played golf at Bluenose in Lunenburg with a group called the Old Smoothies and at Clare Golf Club with his in laws. After retirement he and Jeanette enjoyed travelling, Florida in April, many bus tours, yearly trips to Bangor, Maine, train trips across Canada and best of all a cruise to the Panama Canal. Vennie and Jeanette enjoyed 40 happy years living on Kingsmere Court with wonderful neighbors and six happy years in an apartment, where he enjoyed the weekly coffee club. He never missed a Tuesday morning. Other than coffee he drank diet coke which he called the breath of life. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, Timberlea, now Holy Apostles in Upper Tantallon and recently attended Saint Benedict. Along with his friend Don, they wore many hats to keep Sacred Heart Church in good shape, but they did not sing in the choir. Vennie always had a smile, ready to help and totally dependable. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Jeanette (Comeau); sister-in-law, Dorothy Turner; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vera and Herb Robicheau; brother-in-law, Paul Comeau; nieces, nephews and many cousins. Cremation has taken place under the care of J.A. Snow Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church on Saturday January 23 at 11am. Covid restrictions will be observed. Burial will take place at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery, Halifax. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Much gratitude to the doctors and nurses for their excellent care at the VG Hospital Hematology Clinic, in house blood collection, Medical Day unit, Emergency Department and 8A at the VG. Dear Jeanette:

We express our condolences on your loss. Vennie was truly a kind and considerate person with a ready smile on his face. The former Sacred Heart Parish in Timberlea certainly benefited from his active, but quiet, volunteering in many facets of its operation over the years. He will be missed by all who knew him.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathies to you Jeanette, and the family. Another great one is gone. Every Christmas I still look for Nutcho’s and think of Vennie, and I always will. I can imagine your mother and Mrs Gray enjoying him now, and him teasing them especially your mother. His memory will forever bring a smile to those of us who were blessed to know him. You were both blessed to have had enjoyed so many years together. May his memory always put joy in your heart ❤️ And a smile on your face.

I was shocked to read of Vinnies passing in the paper, mind you it has been years since I spoke with him.My brother,Bob,was the guy who started the Halifax Indians baseball team in the mid 50s here in Halifax.I remember Vinnie so well as the catcher for the team,as I remember he lived on Birmingam Street accross the street from grandad and grandmother Lawrence,I also remember Vinnie doing the catching on the team along with "Chickie" Charlton as back up.At the time we lived on Cook Ave and the coach of the team worked for C>E>Choat Company, his name was Atlee Pineo and he would come to the house and pick up Bob and I and take us to the commons for the game in the van.In the mid 50s minor baseball was in its prime and I remember Vinnie so well, great guy and great player. My brother passed away in 2008 in Florida but I remember the "glory"days of minor baseball on the commons in Halifax,by the way I was the scorekeeper and mascot ! God bless Vinnie,I saw the obit and had to make a comment about him,my prayers are with Jeanette and family at this time.Sincerely Jerry (Jer Bear) Lawrence and Sheila 832 9167 Bedford,or email by the way the photo in the paper is exactly as I remember him God Bless him.
