Born in Halifax in 1942, Vonnie was a daughter of the late Harold and Beatrice (MacNeil) Glazebrook. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased in 2013 by her husband, Frederick Charles Hansen.
Vonnie devoted her life to her family, making a home for Fred and their children while keeping a close watch on her elderly parents. She was a constant support to Fred in his many business endeavors and, together, they enjoyed extensive travelling and their passion for golf. Fred and Vonnie hosted innumerable parties and get-togethers, their New Year’s Eve parties and summer fireworks on the beach being legendary. Although the parties were usually Fred’s idea, it was Vonnie who made them happen looking after the food and all the details. Growing up, our house was a magnet for our friends with Vonnie overseeing countless sleepovers and swim parties.
She is survived by her son Sean (Sonya), daughter Heather and granddaughters, Danielle and Delisca Dunbar and Kayleigh Hansen.
Her children and granddaughters were the light of her life and she often remarked how very proud she was of them. As Vonnie’s illness progressed, her daughter Heather became her caregiver and steadfast protector as she guided Vonnie through her final months. We would be remiss not to mention Vonnie’s dog, Sofie, who provided constant love and companionship.
Vonnie is also survived by her loving sisters, Mary MacDonald (late Ronald), Halifax, who kept a bedside vigil during Vonnie’s last days, and Jenny Purcell (Mike), Moncton, her friend and sister-in-law, Diane Glazebrook, Halifax, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Billy, Gregory and Mickey and by her sister, Sally Grant.
Special thanks to the staff of Unit 7.2 at the Halifax Infirmary site of the QEII for their kindness and the special care they provided during our mother’s last days. Heartfelt thanks to Darlene Leblanc for providing attentive in-home care and to Hope Molaison for always being there when we needed.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. In keeping with Vonnie’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Snow’s on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Vonnie’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. Words of comfort may be sent to www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
