She lived in Gourock throughout her teenage years and worked at the post office after finishing school. She remembered all the hardship the war years brought to Scotland. The only positive result of those times was meeting the love of her life, Harry, who met Winnie at a dance while in Europe serving with the Canadian Navy. He was smitten and proposed to her on the telephone while on training in Ireland. They married on April 30, 1948 in Scotland and Winnie soon came to Toronto on the ship “Empress of Canada” through Pier 21 in Halifax. Harry was stationed in Dartmouth after the war serving on Canada’s aircraft carriers and at the Shearwater Naval Air Station. They lived on Celtic Drive in Dartmouth where their children were born and where they made lifelong friendships with neighbours. After Harry retired from the Navy they moved back to live in Toronto where Harry worked for Air Canada and Winnie worked for Eaton’s. In 1979 they moved to Milton, Ontario where they developed deep friendships at Knox Presbyterian Church. Winnie enjoyed bridge clubs in Milton and made many lasting friendships. They were also fortunate to have wonderful neighbours there. She and Harry just recently moved back to Nova Scotia to be closer to the immediate family.
Winnie enjoyed family, bridge, knitting and was extremely proud of her Scottish ancestry. She was a political junkie and loved to have robust discussions on the politics of the day.
