Alta Mae Vick

Alta was born in Rotan, Texas, to Emmitt and Minnie Weems, the fourth of six children. The family relocated to Dublin, TX when Alta was 7 years old.

Alta started Tarleton State University upon graduation from Dublin High School and met and married John Edward Vick, on December 26, 1953. The couple moved to College Station, Texas, where Alta worked at the Veterinary School as a secretary. Upon John’s graduation from Texas A&M the couple moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Alta worked as a secretary and personal assistant to the famous Dr. Lovelace, Director of Space Medicine in Albuquerque.

John and Alta decided to move back to Texas in the fall of 1959 so John could begin his long career at Lockheed Martin. In the late 1990’s John retired from Lockheed and Alta decided to go back to college to finish the degree she had started in the early 1950’s. Alta received her BA degree in History from UTA in 1996. Her friends and family were so proud of her accomplishment.

John and Alta were very socially active after John’s retirement and Alta completing her degree. They belonged to the Ridglea United Methodist Church and were members of the Friendship Class. John and Alta enjoyed the many friends they made there. John spent several years researching his genealogy and they put a book together of the Vick family and gave to family members.

Alta was known for her kindness and gentle nature, she had a talent for putting people at ease. For Alta and John, community was very important and they enjoyed helping others and loving people. Alta leaves a legacy of kindness, humor, and service. She will be forever loved and profoundly missed.

Alta had a close relationship with her husband, John, and her children, Gayla Vick Stone of Fort Worth, TX and John Vick Jr. of San Marcos, TX. Alta has 5 grandchildren: Brittany Stone of Houston, TX, Jacy Stone Meyer of Fort Worth, TX, Lexi Vick Culleton of Washington D.C., Madison Vick of Austin, TX and Jed Vick of San Francisco, CA. She also has 1 great grandchild, Jack Culleton of Washington D. C. Alta was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Please join us to celebrate the life of Alta at Riley Funeral Home, 402 W. Main St, Hamilton, TX 76531 on February 24, 2024 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. We will meet for lunch at El Jardin Mexican, 200 N. Bell St. Hamilton, TX. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm in Shive Cemetery. From Hamilton, take US 281 south 8 miles to FM 221, go right on FM 221 for 5 miles to cemetery.
