Corene was born on December 21, 1946 in Aleman, TX, to Melvin and Sidonia Kelm Streger. She began her childhood on the family farm and education in Aleman. She attended and was confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aleman, TX. As she approached her high school years, her family moved to Hamilton for her to attend and graduate from Hamilton High School.
Even though Hamilton became her home, her church home continued to be St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aleman where she attended services and Sunday school and sought ways to serve the church through volunteering. Each year, she looked forward to the German Christmas Service celebrating the German heritage with traditional German hymns, tree lighting, and sermon in German. The Stregers were one of the fourteen families to form a congregation for the church in 1886.
Throughout her life, she worked in Hamilton at Winn’s Store, Walls, Hamilton County Auction Barn, and Storm's Restaurant where she enjoyed seeing and serving friends and family. She also drove others to church and assisted people with their errands.
While Corene encountered many medical challenges in her life, she relied on her faith to sustain and carry her each day as a devout Christian. She was grateful for the kindness and assistance others gave to her especially throughout the trials of her life.
Corene greatly enjoyed visiting and spending time with her family and friends who she cared about deeply and valued their company. She will be remembered for her fun sense of humor, heart-warming smile, steadfast faith, and amazing memory for dates and occasions. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.
The family extends gratitude to the staff of Pecan Creek Healthcare Center and Solaris Healthcare in Hamilton, TX for their care of and for Corene.
