He served in the South Pacific in WWII. He married Mary Ellen Ringo on August 18, 1948. She preceded him in death on February 23, 2008 after 60 years of marriage. He received a Master’s Degree in Speech and English from North Texas State University in Denton, TX and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN. He was ordained with the Church of God and pastored in Texas for many years. He also served as Texas State Youth Director. He later worked as a Social Worker for the Church of God Home for Children in Sevierville, TN. He then returned to Texas to work for the San Angelo State School in San Angelo, Texas until retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Everett, Glenn, Aubrey, Jimmy and twin Elbert as well as sister; Mildred.
He is survived by his son Colonel Stephen Mitchell (RET) and wife Johnna of Matagorda, daughter; Jackie Chavarria and husband Johnny of Hamilton, grandchildren; Dean Mitchell, Dr. Joshua Mitchell, Major David Mitchell, June Moyer, Jessica Bass and Christi Wallace, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
He was known by everyone as a jokester. He loved laughing and making others laugh. He will be sorely missed.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at 3:00 PM at Living Waters Church in Hamilton.
Burial will be on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, Oklahoma.
