

W. O. “Rusty” McCollum, of Hamilton, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011 at his home. He was 79 years old. Rusty was preceded in death by his parents Wesley O. McCollum, Sr. and his mother Cora; one brother, Samuel Donald McCollum, one daughter Lisa Rene McCollum; sister Estelle McBurnett; brother Lesley Shope.
Rusty was born in Hamilton, Texas on October 10, 1931. He married his high school sweetheart Tommie Lois Harlein in 1953, and graduated from TCU in 1954 with a Masters degree in Social Studies and Physical Education. Rusty taught school and coached football for 30 years. Mr. McCollum was the greatest teacher, mentor, and friend to all who knew him.
Rusty retired from the Hamilton Public School District in 1981. He was elected Hamilton County Commissioner of Precinct 1 in 1984, serving two terms until 1992. He also held a seat on the Public Library Board of Trustees. Rusty volunteered at the Hamilton County Historical Museum, which he enjoyed greatly. He loved the rich history of Hamilton County and worked to promote its preservation.
Rusty leaves behind his wife Tommie Lois (Harlein) McCollum of Hamilton; daughter, Lori McCollum of Waco, Texas; Two grandchildren, Adrienne L. Royall, of Hamilton and Wesley Thomas Royall , of Waco, Texas.
The McCollum family request that any donations be made in Rusty’s honor to the Hamilton County Historical Museum.
