Patti was born on January 18, 1949, in Richfield, UT. She was the third child born to the late James Richard Gurr and ArVeda (Rothlisberger) Gurr. She grew up with her brother, James “Jim” and her sisters MarJeanne, and Kathryn “Kathy”. Patti graduated from Murray High School in 1967. After high school, she attended the University of Utah for a year and then started working at K-Mart, ending up as their advertising director over the Salt Lake Area. She continued working to help her mother with finances at home, working for K-Mart, Huish Distributing Co., and Green Sheet Newspaper. Patti graduated from the University of Utah (1987) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications. After moving to California with her sister Kathy, Patti worked for State Farm and Mercury Insurance companies as an underwriter and adjuster and at Teradyne in their marketing department. She later received a multi-subject teaching credential from Chapman University.
Family was very important to Patti. Along with helping her mom, she helped take care of her younger sister, Kathy who was born with many health issues. She dedicated her life doing whatever she could to give Kathy a great life, the life that she felt she deserved, especially after their mother passed away. They lived together in their family home in Murray, UT., and after graduating from college, the two of them moved to California, to be closer to their brother and his family. Patti was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She made everyone feel like they were the most important person in the world. Patti and Kathy lived together until Kathy’s passing in 2018.
Patti loved to read. She always had several books that she was reading and taking notes on. She could never get rid of any book, no matter how many times she had read it. Patti took a book with her when she went to a doctor’s appointment, or to the DMV, whenever she had to wait. Her favorites were religious books and history books. You could talk to Patti about almost anything and she had read a book about it. She was a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Patti faithfully served in many calling throughout her life in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was a great teacher and a caring confidant which served her well working as a counselor in the Relief Society, Young Women’s and Primary, teaching Gospel Doctrine, Relief Society and Young Women’s and helping in the Nursery and Library.
Patti is survived by her 6 nieces and nephews J. Jaren Gurr, Kimberly A (Gurr) Thomason, J. Richard Gurr, Elizabeth A. (Gurr) Ioannou, J. Fredrick Gurr, and Jesse M.
