

On April 20th 2012 Doris E. Israel departed this life at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside. Born in Charleston ,South Carolina on August 27th 1924.At the tender age of 3 months she arrived in the Inwood Community. Her mother Louise Williams saw that she was educated in the Lawrence school District,she graduated Lawrence High School in 1942 and with a strong influence from her uncle deacon Rodgers and Ada Green she was inspired to become an activist in the Five Towns and other communities.
She completed courses at Queens College and the New York Adult training Center in Medical Records (1967),completed training at the Addiction Service Agency(1968) as well as the Dave Borden Training Services Techniques for therapeutic treatment for addicts. While laying the foundation for a career in drug treatment she also did volunteer work as a Clinical consultant for Dr. Efram Ramirez at Ardis Commune ,she also worked making community contacts and worked with parent groups and residents of the then named Phoenix program.
Once she began working in the Five Towns Area she extended her work to the Meadowbrook Hospital Drug Ward as the co-leader of (CODA) in 1970,she was instrumental in acquiring beds for addicts who needed detoxification in that facility. In 1971 she was promoted to Coordinator of CODA under her long time mentor Sadie Scott. After her retirement she still continued her career of service as President of National Council of Negro Women(Nassau County Chapter),she also served as a committee Liason for her election district and for the Nassau County Executive on behalf of the Five Towns Community Center.
Rounding out her list of community service includes PTA in both Elementary and Lawrence High School as well as National Council of Jewish Women, Central Council PTA and Temple Sinai Sisterhood where she was a member for thirty five years. Doris raised two children Patricia (deceased), son Matthew. She leaves to mourn three nieces(Elanor,Durga and Barbara), nephews(Leroy and Albert) ,a host of great-grand and grand nieces and nephews.
