Gilad, you were the only kid in school who didn’t push me around and treat me like dirt.

I had no idea Gilad was gone. We went to high school together, but I hadn't spoken to him since 2000. Then I look him up, and I find that he'd passed away. I remember Gilad for how well he treated everyone, and how he never considered himself better than others.  When everyone else at the school was being selfish and hateful, Gilad never turned up his nose at anyone for being badly dressed, overweight, or having a stutter. He was the best example of Derech Eretz and Hesed Shel Emet. But we never really got to know each other, and I regret that.

Shocked and very sad. Not just because Gilad is a friend I grew up with, but for all of his family, his wife, his kids. 
Every time I saw Gilad in recent years - always a smile, always a cheery disposition, always a good and kind word.
My most vivid memories are Shabbos afternoons at the Katzes. Innocent times, fun times, times of just pure friendship and laughter. 
The sadness now, however, is overwhelming. 

I am heartbroken by the sudden passing of Gilad. We had become increasingly friendly over the last few years (especially the last few weeks) in Atlantic Beach and at the Shaarei Minyan. We texted literally hours before he passed, sharing a laugh and setting up a business meeting for Friday AM. Gilad was not only the most magnetic and spirited person in every room, but he went out of his way to harvest smiles. I witnessed him give such Kavod to my Dad/Mom (his summer neighbors) over the last few summers (which he topped off with an eloquent and touching thank you, 2 weekends ago) at the JCAB Hashkama Minyan i.e. Gilad's pride and joy. Most significantly, I learned from Gilad what it means to be an amazing father, as I witnessed the love, Mesiras Nefesh, and example he provided for his children, in particular, his sweet and precious Moshe. My heart aches for the Kalters and the JCAB Mishpacha. His family should have a Nechama.
