Rabbi “Zev”, as he wished to be called, was a close friend and colleague. He was unique as a master chaplain, a superb educator, a bioethics scholar,  chair of the Gurwin Health System Ethics Panel, and a published author. As a chaplain for 30 years, he loved Gurwin’s residents and families. He considered that position his “dream job”.

Zev was the VP of NAJC, co-Chair of the RCA Healthcare Chaplaincy committee, an active member of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Chaplains in Long-Term Care. He was awarded “Chaplain of the Year” by the RCA. He was an observant Jew. He loved the prayers in that they brought him closer to G-d. One of his latest projects was founding Legacy 613, the first organization dedicated solely to the mission of making prayer meaningful--intellectually and experientially--in the life of every Jew, young or old.

I am heartbroken by his unexpected death. Condolences to his family. המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבילי ציון וירושלים ולא תוסיפו לדאבה עוד.

Rest in Peace Rabbi.    A memory to share: Rabbi Schostak knew I was teaching my son's religion class (Catholic) and I would share funny stories and methods that I developed to gain the attention of the children.    I will never forget during one "Rated R for Rabbi" program that I was helping him with, he stopped in the middle of the program, and he said "Patti, I think this video would be good for your class".    A kind man, an honor to have known him.
