James passed suddenly on Saturday, September 12, 2026. He was surrounded by his loving daughters and sisters. He is survived by his daughters, Linda and Jennifer (Krystal McCracken); his beloved grandchildren, Micayla (Mimi), Levante (Samantha), Malakai, Deja and Lashay (Tay); and his great-grandson, Kai. Also surviving are his sisters, Mary VanTil, Patricia Dills, Rita Laskey, Connie Laskey and sister-in-law, Ruth Laskey, along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
James is with his parents, Thomas Vernor and Vincentina Laskey, brother Thomas and his wife Sally, brother John, Aunts Sylvia and Josephine, and most recently, his baby great-grandson Zavon Azai.
James was a great father, grandfather and brother. He loved his family and his friends very much. He was always quick to help with any project. He had a crazy sense of humor and loved to win at games. He would giggle when he won or when the person next to him had to pick up lots of cards while playing Uno.
James attended the Indiana School for the Deaf and has remained friends with many of his classmates.
If you knew him, you know that he was an avid Chicago sports fan. He loved the Cubs, but he really loved the Bears.
Per James’ request, there will be no service. Instead, the family will celebrate him with a cookout. We will share memories and eat his favorite foods.
We are thankful for the many years that we had with him and will miss him deeply.
