Jay Lawrence Hanson

Jay L. Hanson, age 66, of Hammond, IN, passed away on February 8, 2026. He is survived by sisters, Jennifer (Jack) Lewis and Rose (Terry McCormick) Buckmaster; significant other, Katherine Mbonu; children, Shannon (Joe) Bircher and Johnny Kilbourne; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Herbert and Rosalin Hanson; brothers, Theodore and Finis Hanson; long-time partner, Sue Kilbourne; and brother-in-law, Tom Buckmaster, Sr.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road, Highland, IN, 46322 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. The funeral service will take place at 10:00 am on Friday, February 13, 2026, also at Kuiper Funeral Home. Burial to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307.

Jay was an avid musky fisherman. He was a very compassionate, caring man. Jay loved watching sports, favoring the Chicago Cubs and Bears. One of his favorite things to say was "Koo-Koo Kachoo." He will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew him.
