John Walter Schaffenberger

John W. Schaffenberger, 65, passed away August 22, 2014. Beloved husband and best friend to Janis for 43 years; loving father to David (Jill) Schaffenberger; adoring Pa to Kaylie, cherished son to Arlene and the late John Schaffenberger; dearest brother to Bruce Schaffenberger and Jill Vido. John graduated from Clark High School; was currently employed by the United States Post Office in Griffith; retired supervisor and long-time employee of Inland Steel. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force in top security, founding president of the Vietnam Memorial Project of Whiting-Robertsdale, former president of Whiting- Robertsdale Vietnam Veterans organization, member of American Legion Post 80 and an active member of the DAV. He was caring, an eccentric musician, meticulous artist, skilled woodworker, outdoorsman, and loving family man. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the DAV in Hammond, IN. John will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 26th, 2014 from 3:00- 7:30 p.m. Funeral service on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Kuiper Funeral Home 9039 Kleinman Rd. Highland, IN.
