Michael A. "Mike" Huizenga, aged 67, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024, in Crown Point, IN after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Mike was born on November 10, 1956, in Hammond, IN, and graduated from Beaver Creek High School (West Jefferson, NC) in 1974. He began working for a family-owned business at an early age, then went on to Huizenga Farms in Henderson, IL. Later, he was the Parts and Service Manager for Great Lakes Hotsy in Lansing, IL, before retiring early due to the effects of MS.
He is survived by his three daughters, Michelle Huizenga (Mike Harkabus) of Chicago, IL, Karen Sanchez (Omar) of St. John, IN and Randi Pritchard (Peyton) of Morganton, NC; and two sons, Adam Huizenga of Chicago, IL, and Jason Huizenga; his mother, Mamie Houck Huizenga; sister, Dawn (Mike) Lapinne of West Jefferson, NC; one beautiful granddaughter, Leora Rose Pritchard; nieces, Joni Weaver and Tawny Huizenga; nephews, Jake Blejski, Michael Blejski, and Daulton Huizenga (Taylor); and great-nieces, Gracelyn and Emmersyn. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence “JR” Huizenga; sister, Susan Nolte; brother, Tony Huizenga; nephew, Benjamin Nolte; and niece, Beth Weaver.
Mike was a warrior. He battled MS like a champion. His boundless determination and desire for life kept him always smiling, always joking around and carrying on with a positive attitude. His faith was deep and untouchable. He loved the mountains in NC. Mike lived to see his beloved Chicago Cubs win the World Series in 2016, Chicago Bears win the Super Bowl in 1985, and the Chicago Bulls win the NBA Championship six times. His love for sports did not exceed his love for music, specifically Classic Rock, often saying "Rock On", "Where's the tunes?", "Crank it up." But there was no greater commitment than to his family. He was so proud of his children and their accomplishments, no matter how great or how small.
A visitation to honor Mike's memory, followed by a celebration of his life, will be held at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road, Highland, IN 46322. The services will take place on Saturday, August 17, 2024, with the visitation from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and his celebration of life at 12:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National MS Society, Indiana-Kentucky-Tennessee Chapter, or to the Mission Bible Church in Highland, IN. Mike's legacy of courage, love, and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
