OBITUARY

Oscar Guillen Sr.

May 28, 1957January 4, 2020

Oscar Guillén Sr, 62, of Black Oak, Indiana, passed away in his home on January 4, 2020. He was born May 28, 1957 to Álvaro and Celía(Nunez) Guillén, in Gary, Indiana, the youngest of seven. He graduated from Morton High School in 1975. For most of his 20s and 30s he traveled with work as a Lineman that allowed him to experience and live in multiple states including Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. A tragic death to his son Gabriel Guillén brought him back to Indiana where he has lived since. He was known as a “jack of all trades” yet focused most of his career in construction, specifically roofing. Oscar was always known for his playful disposition, youthful spirit and good hearted soul. He enjoyed his motorcycles, fishing, spending time with his lifelong friends, dogs, and visiting family. If you’ve ever met him you would never forget him. He is survived by his sons Oscar Guillén II (Forest, IN), Álvaro Guillén III (Lafayette, IN), Joshua Guillen (Valparaiso, IN) daughter Samantha Guillen (Lincoln, NE); 5 grandchildren, Joshua Jr., Joseph, Kayden, Christian, and Bella; Siblings: Delia Martinez ( Hessville, IN), Alvaro Guillén II ( Valparaiso, IN), Martha Guillen ( Hammond, IN), George Guillen (Griffith, IN), Yolanda & Donald McCorkle ( South Haven, IN), and Elizabeth Guillen ( Peoria, AZ); and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvaro and Celia, and his son Gabriel Guillén. A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Rd (two blocks south of Ridge RD) Highland, IN. Our family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Kuiper Funeral Home & Crematory for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult and time.

Have known Oscar for a lifetime when his sister Martha married my uncle he like the rest of the Guillen's became family. Oscar was very handsome he always knew but me being younger that I was crushing on him yet he was so sweet to me paying attention never rude or mean always with a kind word. Whenever our paths crossed no matter where or who he was with there was always huge hugs kisses we would remember family gatherings old memories we would part with a hugs kisses then say to me til I see u again. So now with tear filled eyes I say til I see u again my Oscar

I knew Oscar at Morton Middle and High Schools. I knew he actually lived in Gary but stayed with his older Sister on Grand Ave near Morton High. I met his parents in Gary and was in their home a couple of times. Oscar was a true and loyal friend. He saved my neck from a total bully one day at school. A few years later I saw Oscar knock the snot out of an evil bully at Morton High. Oscar and I dreamed of joining the Marines together and go to Vietnam after graduation. Of course life changes things for us and we didn't join of course. Oscar and I didn't hang out after those early school years. Life has a way of forcing huge changes on us all. But over the years in my Army career and years of security work, I thought of Oscar and how tough he was. He encouraged me to train in martial arts and I appreciate that very much. Anyway, I thank God for the memory of one of my few childhood friends - Oscar Guillen.

I have so many great memories!! I've known you for over 40 years! Way back when you and my brother Mike became best friends! I was in disbelief when I got the call to go check on you and when I got there they said you were gone! It just doesn't seem real to me! You quickly quit being a friend and became our family! I'm really gonna miss you coming into my job and giving such a big hug no matter what I was doing and asking me if everything was going ok! I'm going to miss you so much!! You'll always have a place in my heart!!
Love You Forever!!

I have good memories of my cousin, Oscar, whenever his family will visit us in Nvo. Laredo, Mexico. I believe one year we all went on a family vacation trip to Acapulco, that was a blast. I will miss my cousin, Oscar :( , it is very sad that he had to part this world at such a young age. My condolences to all his siblings and his children. Blessings and Love, Gabriela Nunez-Friend and Galen Friend
