

Dr. Gray earned her undergraduate degree from Illinois State University. She went on to obtain two master’s degrees—one from Ball State University and the other from Concordia University Chicago. She later earned her doctorate from Loyola University Chicago.
Phyllis dedicated more than three decades of service to Chicago Public Schools, working as a Speech Pathologist from 1978 until her retirement in 2012. Throughout her career, she positively impacted the lives of countless students and families with her compassion, expertise, and commitment to excellence.
In 1991, Phyllis was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, through the Xi Nu Omega Chapter as an Imani initiate. She cherished the lifelong bonds she formed with her Sorors. She also treasured her friendships with fellow retirees and cancer survivor friends.
Phyllis enjoyed an active and fulfilling life. She attended chair yoga, music, and meditation classes, and participated in a monthly book club. An avid reader, she especially enjoyed reading on her Kindle. A true foodie at heart, Phyllis loved exploring new restaurants, with Asparagus being her favorite. She and her friends often became so engaged in meaningful conversation and laughter that they would stay until closing time. She happily offered restaurant recommendations and honest reviews to anyone who asked. Phyllis also had a deep love for the theatre.
She is survived by her siblings, Anthony Gray and Beverly Gray; her nieces and nephews, Carla, Grace, Valerie, Keith, Krystal, and Vondell; her great-nieces and great-nephews, Kandace (Joe), RaShonda, Alexander, Kennedi, Jivonna, DeAnte, Rodney, Jackie, Kamerie, Jaxson, Keverly, Linaka, Mikkala, and Kamari; her great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, Kayla, Ashton, and Kristopher; and her beloved Sorors and friends.
Dr. Phyllis Anne Gray will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her warmth, wisdom, generosity, and unwavering love for family and friends.
Visitation for Phyllis will be held March 6, 2026 from 12:00 until the time of the service at 3:00 pm at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road, Highland, IN 46322.
