

Richard Thomas Watkins, 71, passed away on January 22, 2026, in Crown Point, Indiana. Born on August 2, 1954, in Gary, Indiana, Richard lived a full and vibrant life rooted in hard work, deep connections, and good humor.
A proud graduate of Lew Wallace High School (1972), Richard entered the workforce immediately after graduation. He began his lifelong career at the steel mill, where he remained until retirement, working a wide variety of jobs and forging countless friendships along the way.
Richard was a man of many passions. He loved sports; playing rugby, soccer, and hockey. You could often find him cruising on Lake Michigan in his boat, attending Chicago Blackhawks games, or tinkering with his rotating collection of vehicles. His mechanical curiosity knew no bounds; if something was broken, Richard believed it could—and should—be fixed.
Richard’s generosity was legendary among those who knew him. Whether offering a helping hand or sharing a laugh at a gathering, he brought warmth and humor wherever he went. His easygoing nature made him approachable and beloved by many. Though known for being a bit stubborn at times, Richard’s devotion to his family was unwavering
Richard is survived by his children, Joshua Watkins (Lisa Stojanovich) of Hobart and Hannah Andera (Zach) of Plymouth, RI; his grandchildren, Bo and Cy Andera; his loyal canine sidekick Watty; his siblings Sue Mazepa of Hebron, David Watkins (Debra) of Kennewick, WA, Kathy Watkins Stein of Pompano, FL, and Patti Wiler (Bill) of New Paris; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Delbert, mother Virginia, and brother Bill.
Richard’s life was one of laughter, love, and relentless curiosity. He touched countless lives with his kindness and humor. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, from 5-9PM at Avalon Manor Banquet Center, 3550 E Lincoln Hwy, Merrillville, IN 46410. The family requests guests wear something that reminds them of Richard and honors his legacy.
