Robert E. Durling of Highland, IN passed away Jan. 10, 2018 at the age of 99. Bob was born Oct. 9, 1918 in Kenosha, WI and grew up in Chicago. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty in 2011 after 67 years of marriage. A private military service was held on January 13th at Chapel Lawn Cemetery. Bob leaves behind two daughters, Cheryl (Howard 2017) Chiluski of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Linda (Dave) Branson of Highland; granddaughters Melanie (Andy) Sojka and Melissa (Jim) Burlison of Crown Point; grandsons Bennett and Austin of Atlanta, GA and eight great grandchildren. Bob retired from Inland Steel Co. after 38 years of service in the Engineering Dept. He served in the Army from 1942-1946 as a lieutenant reaching the rank of Captain. Later in life he accomplished writing a humorous book, owned a race horse, and traveled the U.S. with Betty. Donations in his memory can be made to Hospice of Calumet Area or Wounded Warrior Project.
