Virgil Lee Powell Jr. age 54 of Gary, Indiana passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at home with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife Elsie (nee Cowart) Powell; Five Children: Michelle Cowart, Virgil Powell III, Vanessa Powell, Jason (Maegan) Powell and Amanda (Ray) Powell; Four Grandbabies: Elissa Cowart, Raylynn Powell, Raymond Powell and Bryson Powell; Grandfather Ralph Oldham and siblings Barbara Johnson, Shirley Pennington, Robert Johnson and Patrick Powell.
Virgil is preceded in death by his parents Virgil Sr. and Joyce Ann Powell; and his little brothers William "Billy" Powell and James Powell.
He was born in Hammond, IN. Virgil was a life long resident of Gary (Black Oak) IN. He attended Calumet High School where he met Elsie his wife of 38 years! They were young and in love and started their family.
Virgil shared the love of his fathers business and eventually joined him in running P&S Towing for years!
He loved taking his kids and grandbabies fishing. If there was water they would fish lakes, rivers or ponds. He secretly loved when the grandbabies relentlessly teased him when they caught the first fish of the night!!! At any point they would be ready to pick up and hit the fishing spot. Sometimes waiting for hours for "a bite"!
In his exact words...
"It don't matter if you fall in, As long as the fish don't get away"!!!!
A memorial visitation will take place at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road, Highland IN on Friday, May 14, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Masks are required and please practice social distancing.
