David Manuʻā Heaukulani, 88, of Hilo, passed away on August 22, 2026, at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Born in Kalopa, HI. He was a retired Assistant Chief of Police with the Honolulu Police Department and served as Executive Officer of Pohakuloa. He was also a proud member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I organization.
Service will be held on Wednesday September 23rd at Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo. 570 Kinoole Street Hilo. Visitation will begin at 8:30 am. Service will start at 9:00 am. Military honors at 11:30 to follow at the East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery II. 110 Laimana St, Hilo, Burial will be at 12:00 pm.
He is survived by wife, Gay Ashida Heaukulani; sons, Jeffrey (Avidan) Heaukulani, Creighton Koa Heaukulani; Daughters, Heather (Ben) Grimmer, Jodi (Marco) Heaukulani; sister-in-law Eunice Muramoto; brother-in-law Lincoln Ashida; four grandchildren and numerous cousins.
