Adriano “Andy” Buendia passed away and was granted eternal life on November 16, 2022. He was born on March 5, 1938 in Nagcarlan, Philippines, and is the 2nd eldest of the 5 children of Antonio and Filomena Buendia. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Feati University in Manila, Philippines. He started his career at the Manilla Electric Company (MERALCO). In 1974 he married his wife, Sofia, and they decided to take an adventure to pursue the American Dream and immigrate to the United States. In 1975, after receiving his immigration paperwork and saving $1000 to his name, he traveled to the United States briefly to San Francisco, CA, and then first settled in Richland, WA. He became a United States citizen, and in 1979 welcomed his eldest son, Michael. Various employments prompted multiple relocations across the country, first to Hampton, NH, where his daughter, Allyson, was born, and then ultimately settling in Chattanooga, TN, where his 2nd son, Matthew, was born. Over his career, he worked for many engineering firms specializing in Nuclear Power plant construction with companies such as Bechtel, Raytheon, and United Engineers where he made many friends across the country. For the past 35 years he resided in Chattanooga, TN and has been a member of Saint Jude Catholic Church.
Andy enjoyed taking his family on car trips to over half of the United States and Canada. He loved fishing, barbequing, and Sunday picnics. As his children grew older, he and his wife spent late nights with their Filipino potluck friends, singing karaoke to his favorite songs from artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Perry Como.
Andy dreamed of success for his family and rests now with great pride in his family's legacy. He was a loving husband for 48 years and proud father to his 3 children. He treasured and loved being the grandfather "Lolo" to his 4 granddaughters. Regardless of his ailments, a glimpse or interaction from his granddaughters would make him smile.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Filomena Buendia, and his brothers Eliseo and Nicomedes Buendia.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sofia; his children, Michael (Karmel) Buendia, Allyson (Matthew) Underwood, and Matthew Buendia; his cherished granddaughters, Isabella and Lucy Buendia, Madeline and Abigail Underwood; his siblings Angelina Monakil, Renato Buendia; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Visitation will be held on Nov 21, 2022 from 11am-12pm at St. Jude Catholic Church 930 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN 37415.
A funeral mass will follow at 12pm with Fr. Charlie Burton officiating, followed by entombment at the St. Jude columbarium.
