Don was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was a 1961 graduate of Chattanooga Central High School. He served our country during the Vietnam Era in the United States Marine Corp and then continued to serve in the Army National Guard with a combined 35 years of service. Don worked and achieved the rank of Master Patrolman with the City of Chattanooga Police Department where he retired after 26 years. He continued his service to this city and county as a Patrolman with Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office for the next 11 years. He was of the Baptist faith.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Katherine Dixie Chandler; daughter, Dawn Cheree Chandler.
He is survived by his daughter, Donna Chandler Griffin; five grandchildren, Colt Chandler Helton and Savannah Helton, Orry and Tristan Murrey and Skylar Griffin; two great grandchildren, Eli Murrey and Phoenyx Coley; brothers, Larry (Donna) Chandler and Gary (Karen) Chandler; brothers-in-law, several nieces and nephews and special friend, Anna Hill;
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 pm on Wednesday and 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm on Thursday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be conducted at 2:30 pm on Thursday at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Chaplain Mark Harwood officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Scleroderma Foundation, Tennessee Chapter, P. O. Box 2844, Hendersonville, TN 37077 or Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416 in Don and Dixie’s memory.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
