She was born May 8, 1941 in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from North High School, class of 1959. She attended Belmont College/Mid-State Baptist Hospital’s nursing program and then began working for an ENT practice. On August 12, 1961, she married the love of her life, Alvin Duncan, and they eventually moved to Chattanooga in 1966.
Barbara was a devoted wife, mother of three, daughter, sister, and Nana to her seven grandsons. Her deep love of Jesus was sweetly reflected through her kindness, compassion, and passion to serve others with anything from a listening ear to a willingness to volunteer at church and in her kids’ classrooms at school. With her huge, classic green, simulated wood paneled station wagon (with the coveted backward-facing third row seat) she always drove and chaperoned for school field trips and loved to deliver her home cooked meals to those in need. For many years she worked as a teacher’s assistant at East Brainerd Church of Christ Preschool.
More than anything else, she loved worshiping alongside her family and friends, even until her last few days, with her memory robbed by dementia, she continued to ask if it was time for church or when are we were going to sing. She demonstrated a Philippians 2 kind of love for her husband, family, friends, and strangers alike.
Heaven is certainly a more beautiful place with Barbara and Alvin now worshipping together, in song and praise in the presence of Jesus.
She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Amos and Ruby Overstreet and her husband, Alvin Duncan.
She is survived by her brother, James (Sandy) Overstreet; son, Mark (fiancé Kelly Michelle Conner) Duncan; daughters, Kelley (Dodd) Hartness and Kim (John) Spruiell; grandchildren, Anthony (Caitlin) Duncan, Coty McDowell, Ralston (Elle) Hartness, Graham Hartness, Peyton (Alicyn) Duncan, Walker Spruiell, and Jarred Duncan; great-grandchildren, Mallie Hartness and Ronan Duncan; and many loving friends and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Barbara’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011 Washington, DC 20090-6011 or www.alz.org/donate
