Betty S. Prater

She was born on May 2, 1934 in Centre, Alabama to the late Andrew and Mary Lee Steele. Her siblings, Austin Steele, “Snip” Steele, “Sam” Steele, Idene Gibson, Irene Howard, Ruby King, Mary Louise Shirk and Bobby Steele precede her in death.

Betty was a member of Central Baptist Church and Dallas Bay Church and was involved in various ministries through the years, including being in charge of the children’s choir at Central Baptist and taking care of babies in the nursery. She worked many years as an Assistant Buyer at Miller Brothers department store and would later go on to be the Office Manager in the family business at Gil Prater Tax Service. Betty had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. She loved to sew and crochet, but what she loved the most was spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her loving husband of 73 years, Gilbert R. Prater, daughters, Louann Smith (Richard), Becky Sullivan (Tripp), grandchildren, Gretchen Bourgeois (Billy), Van Sullivan (Marion), Connor Sullivan; brother, Tommy Steele and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, January 13, 2024 in the chapel at Hickory Valley Senior Community Living, 6705 Ballard Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37421 with Rev. Ken Young officiating. A reception will follow in the activity room.
