Bill Cronan

It is with love and remembrance that we announce the passing of Billy R. Cronan, who died on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the age of 83 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Growing up in Lupton City, Bill developed a lifelong passion for golf. At just ten years old, he began working as a caddie at both the Lupton City and Rivermont golf courses. Many days of his retirement were spent enjoying the camaraderie of the weekly low-ball games at Moccasin Bend Golf Club. His family fondly remembers his descriptive retellings of “shooting his age” after entering his mid-seventies, and the shared laughs they enjoyed over his complaints of his abysmal putting.

When he wasn’t on the golf course, few things rivaled Bill’s love for the Tennessee Vols. He attended nearly every home football game from the late 1960s through 2012 and never missed a minute of television coverage afterword. Through every rebuilding season he kept his hope in the Vols and knew their time would come again.

Bill was proud of his 32-year career with the United States Postal Service, retiring as Manager of Mail Distribution for Chattanooga. He led by example and, through both his career and home life, taught his family the importance of honesty, integrity, and dependability.

Bill shared 64 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Betsy. The two met while attending Hixson High School and later built a home together in Manchester Park. They faithfully attended Redbank Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon, and formed lasting friendships and a strong community. Together they raised two boys, Jeff (Cindy) and David (Colleen), and were blessed with five grandchildren: Hayden, Reagan, Bryce, Sean, and Claire. Bill shared a close relationship with his younger brother, Bob (Carolyn).

Affectionately known as Grandaddy or G, his grandchildren were among the greatest joys in his life. They shared countless adventures together, from cowboy rides on his back to hikes and canoe trips at Greenway Farms and endless afternoons watching John Wayne and Clint Eastwood westerns. He showed up for them, never missing a sporting event and often appearing at weekday practices. Bill had an incredible memory and was able to recall their exact plays and scores an impressive number of years later.

Bill leaves his family with many great memories and sayings that will live on for years to come. He will be remembered as a fair, hardworking, and loyal man whose calm demeanor, patience, and quiet strength defined the way he lived his life.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 24th from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, Hixson. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel with Steve Lusk officiating. The family will have a private interment in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
