Brigitte was born on May 7, 1940, in Ludwigshafen, Germany, in the Rhine Valley. Her childhood was shaped by the difficult years of World War II and Germany’s postwar recovery, experiences that helped instill in her the strength, resilience, and compassion that would define her throughout her life. As a young woman in Germany, Brigitte met George, a U.S. Air Force serviceman stationed there. They married and began a lifelong journey together, sharing 67 years of marriage. In 1961, they made their home in Chattanooga, where they raised their family and built a life filled with faith, family, and lasting memories.
Brigitte was a woman of deep faith who believed strongly in helping others. She was a longtime member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and devoted decades to its Philoptochos Society, a philanthropic organization dedicated to serving those in need and supporting the church and community. Her kindness, generosity, and willingness to give of herself were qualities that touched the lives of many.
She also had a true gift for gardening and found great joy in creating beautiful spaces around her home. She had a natural talent for growing flowers and plants, and her gardens brought her tremendous pride and happiness. Her work earned numerous accolades and recognition in local newspapers. For Brigitte, gardening was more than a hobby, it was a way to create beauty and share that beauty with others.
Brigitte was preceded in death by her parents, Maria and August Dambach, and her sister, Edith Zinsmiester, all of Germany.
She is survived by her devoted husband, George Dimopoulos; daughter, Elleni Dimopoulos; son, Dennis Dimopoulos (Barbara); grandson, Alex Tedrick; sisters-in-law, Ethel Winegar, Vicky Gavalas (Mike), and Kathy Mayfield (Ron); as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Chattanooga or to a favorite charity.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home – North Chapel, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
Funeral Service will be held Friday, September 4, 2026, 12:00 p.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 722 Glenwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37404. Interment will immediately follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Bailey Avenue at 1:30 p.m.
