Born in Natchez, Mississippi, Bruce moved to El Dorado, Arkansas, at a young age. He graduated from El Dorado High School in 1965 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Following graduation, he was recruited into the U.S. Navy flight training program in Pensacola, Florida, proudly serving his country as a Naval Flight Officer.
After his military service, Bruce built a successful career in the insurance industry, working with Provident Life and Accident, Cigna Healthcare, and later retiring from Colonial Life.
In 2016, Bruce and his wife, Janice, became active members of Dallas Bay Church, where they found great fellowship and faith.
Bruce enjoyed an active life filled with the pursuits he loved most—hunting, fishing, scuba diving, and cheering for the Atlanta Braves and Arkansas Razorbacks. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family and friends, whom he loved deeply.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Sydna Mercer, and his son, Wade Livingston Mercer.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Janice Mercer; daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and Rob Smith; granddaughter, Catelynn Smith; and many dear friends.
A Celebration of Bruce’s Life will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. in the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, with Pastor David McNabb officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior, beginning at 11:30 a.m. He will be laid to rest privately in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
