

Caroline was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to the United States as a child. After graduating from Red Bank High School and obtaining a journalism degree from Memphis State University, she first worked as a librarian and then as a health care technician. Caroline enjoyed family vacations, collecting antiques, high school reunions, and church activities; her special talent was surprising loved ones with unique and thoughtful gifts.
Caroline is survived by her son Peter Mathis, daughter-in-law Amy Austin, granddaughter Samantha Mathis, and former husband Nick Mathis. Further survivors include her siblings Phyllis Irby-Downing, Lucy Sowell Kirby (Brian), Denise Johnson (Bill), and Jud Sowell (Nina), niece Lida Buckley (James), nephews Sidney Irby and Benjamin Sowell, special friend Ernest “Scottie” Scott, and numerous relatives in Argentina. Caroline was also close to her companions at Greer House and received excellent care at Hospice of Chattanooga.
A family and friends visitation will held at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Sunday, February 12 from 5pm to 7pm and Monday, February 13, from 12 to 1 pm.
A service to remember Caroline will be held at the North Chapel Chattanooga Funeral Home, 5351 Hwy. 153, Hixson, TN 37373, officiated by Rev. Mia Pittman-Head on Monday, February 13, 2017 at 1pm. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Caroline’s memory may be made to Omega Harvest Church 4904 Dayton Blvd, Chattanooga, TN 37415.
