Carolyn Dean Underwood

Born on January 4th, 1942 in Tulsa, OK to the late E. E. “Dean” and June Marshall Bridges, she spent her younger years thrilling audiences with her roller-skating skills beginning at the age of two. She spent most of her formative years traveling with her parents for her father’s work with Dupont, living in fourteen states and even abroad. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior while living in Florida and graduated high school with honors in 1960 at Nederland High School in Nederland, Texas.

All of the moves and experiences eventually led them to Hixson, TN where she was introduced to the love of her life, Stephen “Coach” Underwood. They wed in June of 1966 and modeled a loving and devoted relationship for over 50 years. She held many positions for work throughout her life but her greatest joy was the years she spent raising their two children, watching them thrive and have families of their own.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, and is survived by her son, Stephen (Stacy) Underwood; daughter, Stephanie (Thomas) Underwood Lawson; four grandsons; Nicholas Underwood, Hayden Underwood, Andrew Lawson, and Oliver (Maddie) Lawson.

We are forever thankful for the exemplary care she received at Bailey Manor of Winchester, TN.

A Celebration of Carolyn’s Life will be held on Wednesday July 1, 2026 at the Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home North, at 2:00 PM with Rev. Mark Gooden officiating. Entombment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until service time at the North Chapel.

In lieu of flowers the family requests to please make donations to Hixson High School, designate to the Hixson High School Band.
