

Mr. Adkins worked most of his life for both the Hamilton County and Tennessee State health departments. He also worked part time at Zales jewelry store at Northgate.
He was a graduate of Chattanooga Central High School, where he was a member of the Purple Pounders football team, and Chattanooga State Technical Community College.
Mr. Adkins was born in Deer Head Cove, Ala., on the side of Sand Mountain to R.D. “Doc” and Margie Adkins.
For a while his family lived near the historic Craven’s House on the side of Lookout Mountain.
In 1956 he was a founding member of The Road Master's Hot Rod Club, which built a quarter-mile drag strip in Middle Valley. Former Chattanooga Free Press automotive editor Buddy Houts was a key figure in founding the club.
Mr. Adkins served in the U.S. Navy on an aircraft carrier during the 1950s.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Kay Adkins; his parents R.D. and Margie Adkins: his sisters, Christine “Cricket” Ashley and Louise Adkins; his brother Roy Adkins and nephew Steve Adkins.
Survivors include his son Clay Adkins of Cleveland, Tenn.; grandson Ryan Adkins of Cleveland; granddaughter Natalie Tarver (Rossman) of Cleveland; sister-in-law Sandra Seitz of Chattanooga; nephews, Jim Ashley of Chattanooga and Fred Adkins of Jacksonville, Fla.; nieces Wanda Barger of Madisonville, Susan Day of Chattanooga and Pam Williams of Jacksonville; cousins, including Ray Adkins and Doris Ellis of Chattanooga.
The family will receive friends on Sunday November 13, 2022 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
