Born in Fort Payne, Alabama, on September 8, 1947, Elaine was a proud graduate of Glenwood Elementary and Chattanooga Central High School. She spent much of her life in the communities she loved, dividing her time between her homes in Hixson, TN, and Destin, FL. Elaine enjoyed a dedicated career with DuPont and an extensive career in residential auction and real estate from which she eventually retired. The same social and adventurous spirit that marked her professional life was also part of all her personal relationships, which eventually led her to travel and experience nearly all 50 US states.
Elaine was known for her vibrant social nature and her deep connection to her community. She was an active presence in the community, maintaining a vast network of friends and participating in numerous community groups. Elaine devoted thousands of hours volunteering for the Boy Scouts of America, from which all three of her sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. She cherished her experiences and time spent at the Boy Scout National Jamboree, Skymont Scout Camp, and Cub Scout Day Camps influencing the futures of Scouts from all over. As someone who loved the outdoors, she was also extremely proud to become a Master Gardener in her retirement.
She is survived by her loving family, including her sons William (Bill) B. Tate, Jr. and wife Stephanie, John G. Tate and wife Amy, and Richard (Rick) N. Tate and wife Heather. Additional survivors include her five cherished grandchildren who affectionately knew her as “Gramma”: Bailey (Bill), Tyler (Rick), Lia (Bill), Conner (Rick), Lucy (John), and her beloved dog Beau. Her family remembers her as a woman of character who took immense pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She beamed with pride at their academic successes, athletic endeavors, and eventual professional accomplishments. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband William B. Tate, Sr., parents Bernard W. & Velma Hubbard, siblings Joy Mooney, Jim Hubbard, and Donna Davis. Other survivors include her dearest relatives from Geraldine, AL and Morton, MS.
In these last years, Elaine resided in a memory care facility where she continued to receive the care and support of her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Elaine’s family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Rachel Labovitz and Dr. Betsy Washburn of CommonSpirit Memorial Medical Group, the nurses and physicians at CommonSpirit Memorial, all of the staff and nurses of the Lantern at Morning Pointe on Shallowford Road, and the staff and nurses of Hospice of Chattanooga for the care and compassion they gave Elaine over her last years of life. Special thanks to Ms. Peggy Fowler, her son Brian, and Felicia Lewis for the comfort they provided during her final days.
