

Fred Euell Copeland, 102, passed away on Wednesday, October 05, 2011 in Chattanooga. He was born in Notasulga, Alabama on May 31, 1909 to William Douglas and Sarah Hill Windham Copeland. After receiving B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) he taught in the Macon County (Alabama) schools and worked for AT&T. While working in Chattanooga he met and married Kate Davis on July 20, 1935. He subsequently held positions in the mapping and survey divisions of TVA in Chattanooga and the U.S. Geological Survey in Arlington, Virginia, from which he retired in 1970. His interests included reading, travel, photography and needlepoint.
Throughout his life, Fred was a member, elder and deacon in various Presbyterian churches, and served as clerk of session for those churches for over 50 years. He was currently a member of Northside Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, parents and six brothers and sisters. Survivors include his daughter Kay (George) Barnes of Cheyenne, Wyoming; granddaughter Linda (Eric) Reckentine of Fort Collins, Colorado; grandson Chuck (Maria Veronica) Barnes and two great-granddaughters, Ivana Barnes and Camille Barnes, all of Waltham, Massachusetts; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family service of commitment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 9, at Northside Presbyterian Church, 923 Mississippi Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37405 with the Rev. Ben Skidmore officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
