Fred was born in Oak Ridge, TN, on July 24, 1946, and was still a baby when his family relocated to Chattanooga, TN. He graduated from Central High School in 1964; shortly afterward, he became Southeastern Regional Champion, a title he defended for many years. He served in the US Army National Guard, made a career as a steamfitter, and was a lifelong member of the Plumbers & Steamfitters Union Local 43.
An avid sports fan, Fred coached the Harrison Rangers and supported Tennessee football, through fair weather and foul. He loved fishing with his son Chad on their favorite lake lakes in the area. Later in life he became a student of Bigfoot lore and became a firm believer in him. He enjoyed puzzles and mental challenges.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mary (Bowlin) Lewis, as well as son, Chad Lewis.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Karen Elaine Lewis, daughter, Amy (Ashley) Hulgan, grandson, Alex Standefer, brother Philip A. (Linda) Lewis, and sister, Nancy Lewis Kendall, as well as nieces, cousins, and many friends.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Tuesday December 2, 2025 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with friends and family encouraged to attend.
The family would like to thank the Chattanooga Heart Institute, especially Dr. Thiel and Dr. Jones, for their patience and care over the years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the American Heart Association.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
