He was preceded in death by his dear parents, L.R. “Rube” and Bea Campbell; sister, Denise McGee, and niece, Misty Campbell.
A graduate of Hixson High School, Gary excelled in sports and was recognized as Most Athletic his senior year. In basketball, he was named to the All-City Team and had the distinction of being on the Nation’s Top 500 High School Stars. In his senior year, Gary pitched a perfect game, striking out 13 batters.
After high school Gary attended Hiawassee College on a basketball scholarship and later completed a 4 year apprenticeship in millwright training. He worked as a millwright for over 40 years and was plant engineer at Mueller Company for 12 years.
Gary was a longtime member of North Chattanooga Church of God (now The Ministry Center) and later attended Cross of Calvary Community Church. As a member of North Chattanooga, he taught Sunday school for many years and played highly competitive church softball in the 1970’s. He maintained a lifelong friendship with many of his church teammates. The North Chattanooga team became the Men’s Major Church State Champs in 1979.
As an accomplished athlete, Gary developed a love of golf, and in 2015 he had a double eagle and a hole in one. However, his passion for golf was no match for the enthusiasm he had as a fan for his grandchildren’s ballgames.
Gary is survived by Donna Wood Campbell, his high school sweetheart and loving wife of almost 50 years; three devoted children, Joe (Kellie) Campbell, Jon Campbell, and Laura Stephenson; five grandchildren, Kelsey (Ryan) White, Hayley Moreno, Leah Campbell, Noah Stephenson, and Louie Stephenson; great granddaughter, Beckham White; one brother, Tommy Campbell; five nieces and two nephews.; and many dear friends.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 Monday and from 11-12 Tuesday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 12:00 Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Winters and Reverend Ian Shaw officiating. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
