Geneva C. Hughes, 97, of Ooltewah, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2022 ending her earthly journey to begin her everlasting one. She was born in Chattanooga to the late Sanford A. Cunningham and Cora E. Cunningham. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 73 years, George Jackson “Jack” Hughes, a son, Lynn R. Hughes, brothers, Sanford “Bud” Cunningham and Larry Cunningham, sisters, Allean Elrod, Elnora Beene, and Bernice Barlew.
She is survived by daughter, Pixie Houts (John), son, Ken Hughes (Delilah), grandchildren, Kip Houts (Tara), Brent Houts (Monica), Allyson Houts Brown, Rachel Nichols (Blake), great-grandchildren, Hannah Lyle, Jackson and Peyton Brown, Emma and Owen Houts, Lilah, Lena and Willow Nichols and sisters, Leona Culpepper and Margie Cheatham, several nieces and nephews. Geneva was active in her church and unwavering in her faith. She served with her husband as a pastors wife for churches in Owasso, Michigan, Sequatchie, Tennessee and Guadalajara, Mexico. She was active in children's ministries and women's missionary organizations. She also worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for several businesses.
The family will remember her easy laughter, her art, and as a great cook, especially her irreplaceable “Thanksgiving dressing”. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. As her great-grandson stated “she was a gentle soul, a genuinely kind and happy person.” She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by each of us now and until we are with her again.
Funeral services will be 2:00 Saturday, September 24 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12-2 Saturday.
