James Wendell “Jim” Howard ran into the arms of his loving Savior surrounded by his family on May 27, 2024, at the age of 85 after a long illness. He was a native of Chattanooga, born to Alfred Wendell, and Martha Scarbrough Howard, on April 17, 1939. He was a graduate of Kirkman Technical High School and Tennessee Temple University.
After high school, he served for two years in the United States Navy stationed in Charleston. After returning to Chattanooga, he worked at the TNT plant and the Double Cola Company before beginning a 31-year career as an electrician at Norfolk-Southern Railroad.
The only thing that Jim loved more than his wife and family was his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He enjoyed nothing more than “knocking on doors” and telling others about Jesus. There is no way of knowing how many people are in heaven today because of his obedience to the Lord’s command to “go and tell.”
Jim was a proud member of Calvary Baptist Red Bank, where he worked in the Operation Go and Reformers Unanimous outreach programs and served as a greeter.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Doris Sedman Giles, a nephew, Kevin Sedman, and an infant great-grandson.
He is survived by his wife of 41½ years, Barbara Bryan Howard; two sons, Mitchell and David Howard; two daughters, Paula King and Rebecca (Robert) Day; one stepdaughter, whom he loved like his own, Amy Alford Waterman (Scot); a special grandson, James Benjamin Howard; and a special friend, Phil Minton. He is also survived by eight additional grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. His sister, Edna Pemberton, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Special thanks to Amedisys Home Health and Amedisys Hospice, especially Miranda, Brian, Richard, and Pat, for caring for Jim so lovingly.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 3, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 4, at 11:00 am, with Pastor Greg Powell and Pastor Dwight Martin officiating. Interment will follow at 12:30 pm at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Calvary Baptist Church, 5201 Dayton Boulevard, Chattanooga, TN, 37415 (earmarked for Missions); or Jewish End-Time Ministries (JEM), P.O. Box 300, Graysville, GA, 30736.
