James was born in Elkhorn City, Kentucky on October 31, 1943. He was a veteran of the US Air Force, having served as a K-9 MP at bases in Morocco and Blytheville, Arkansas. He moved to Chattanooga in 1965, where he worked for Norfolk Southern for forty years.
James loved the outdoors and was an avid hiker. He hiked the Appalachian Trail and volunteered for the National Park Service for many years.
James was preceded in death by his parents, James E. and Ruth Matney, sister Diana Hamilton, and brother Monty Matney.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Linda D. Matney, and his two sons, Brian and Mark Matney, and good friend and brother-in-law Gary Hamilton of Pikeville, Kentucky.
A small graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
