

He was born in Kentucky and raised in Athens, Alabama, where he completed his education at Athens High School. Jeff went on to further his studies at the University of Alabama, earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Jeff spent most of his career at TVA where he specialized in radiation monitoring and was valued as a colleague, friend and mentor of many.
Survived by his brother Steve Newton and his spouse Carol, Jeff will always be remembered by his niece Wendy Nesmith and her children Benjamin, Jonathan, and Tenley Nesmith. He is also remembered by his former wife Margaret Newton and his step-children Andrew Smith and his wife Shannon, Zoe Luter and her husband Matt, Sally Whittaker, Harriet Rayle and her husband Oscar, and Sam Whittaker and his wife Elizabeth, as well as many step-grandchildren. Additionally, Jeff was deeply loved by many cousins and loyal friends who will miss him greatly.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Roy K. and Chris (Thurman) Newton and his former wife, Lois Newton.
Jeff was a multifaceted individual with a variety of interests. He was an enthusiastic photographer and started a photography business with close friends while studying at the University of Alabama. Many we are sure still possess their ZAP photos as precious mementos of their college years. Jeff was intrigued by the universe and stars and always aspired to one day travel beyond earth. He became a licensed pilot and was passionate about flying and all things related to planes. Jeff also loved to travel both within the United States and internationally, bringing back beautiful photos and captivating stories that he enjoyed sharing with his family and friends. He was an avid table tennis player and was a member of the Chattanooga Table Tennis Club. He enjoyed playing and meeting new friends and competitors at table tennis clubs throughout his travels around the world.
Jeff’s family will receive friends on Thursday, February 16, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the Chattanooga Funeral Home – North Chapel, Hixson.
Funeral Services celebrating Jeff’s life will be held on Friday, February 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home.
Jeff’s family wishes to express our sincerest appreciation to his care team at Hospice of Chattanooga, his step-son Sam, and his home care aide, Candy, all of whom provided him their best with great reverence and respect.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Jeff may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga or CHI Memorial Hospital.
