Jerita was born on February 3, 1938, in Watauga, TN, to Norman and Eva Duncan Scott. While working as a dental hygienist in Johnson City, she met James E. Lawrence, Sr. and married on July 8, 1961. After moving to Chattanooga in 1974, she would later hold supervisory positions with Provident and Merastar, and later work as a receptionist for several doctors. She was a member of Hickory Valley Christian Church where she enjoyed worshiping and serving.
Jerita was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere. She was the consummate homemaker, and known by all to be an outstanding cook, hostess, and always life of the party. Nothing made her happier than to share a meal with friends and family. She had a servant’s heart and was generous to a fault.
Jerita was preceded in death by her loving husband; parents; sister, Vanita Payne; and niece, Jerita Payne.
Survivors include her son, James E. Lawrence, Jr. (Lisa); grandchildren, Emily (Daniel) Walker and Matthew Lawrence; great-grandchildren, Faith and Ruthie Walker; brother, Norman E. Scott, Jr.; and several nephews.
A graveside service and interment will be held at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City, TN.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Hickory Valley Christian Church, Chattanooga, TN.
The Lawrence family would like to thank Martin-Boyd Christian Home’s entire staff for providing her a quality of life through their extraordinary care and kindness over these last two years, Hospice of Chattanooga for their expertise and care, and the funeral home’s Tom Tallent for his gentleness and guidance.
