Jimmy Elwin Smith

Jimmy Elwin Smith, 86, of Chattanooga peacefully entered his eternal home surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. He was born on October 31, 1939, to the late Otto Elwin Smith and Doris Smith. He was raised by his precious grandmother Myrtle Smith.

Jimmy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend whose life was marked by quiet strength, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Dollis Ann Smith, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and commitment. He also leaves behind his sons, Rodney (Becki) Smith and Keith Smith; sister, Diane (Nubern) Hutchenson; five cherished grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends who will forever treasure his memory.

As a young man Jimmy proudly served his country in the United States Army, demonstrating his patriotism and sense of duty that remained with him throughout his life. Following his military service, he worked for Chattanooga Glass until multiple sclerosis forced him into retirement. Though the disease presented many challenges, Jimmy met them with resilience, dignity, and perseverance, inspiring those who knew him through his quiet courage and steadfast spirit.

Jimmy’s greatest joy was his family. He found happiness in spending time with those he loved, celebrating life’s simple blessings, and sharing the wisdom that comes from a life well lived. His gentle nature, kind heart, and enduring love will leave a lasting legacy in the lives of all who knew him.

Jimmy’s faith in Jesus Christ was a source of comfort and strength throughout his life. His family takes comfort in the promise of scripture that “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8) Thought he will be deeply missed here on earth, they rejoice in knowing that he has been welcomed into the presence of his Savior, where there is no more pain, suffering, or sorrow, and where he has found perfect peace.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 1:30 Wednesday, August 5 at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, love and support during this difficult time.
