She was born October 15, 1924 in Pulaski County Kentucky. Johanna was a member of First Baptist Church, Chattanooga, and was a church pianist. She attended Liberty High School, Casey County, Kentucky and graduated from Somerset High School, Somerset, Kentucky, and Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky, with studies at Columbia University, New York City. Johanna was retired from Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant in Chattanooga.
Johanna enjoyed music, reading, cooking, and traveling. She was a talented pianist and was an enthusiastic scrabble player. Johanna had a genuine interest in helping others and in the pursuit of knowledge.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Millie Ashley Lewis; stepfather, Carl E. Lewis and father, C. W. Starnz.
Her maternal grandparents, Solomon and Sarah Ashley of Casey County, Kentucky, were loving parents to twelve children. Johanna, one of their forty six grandchildren, developed life-long relationships with several of those cousins.
We honor her memory with love and respect. The family wishes to express our deepest appreciation for Susan Felker for her assistance, love, and compassionate care given to Johanna. The family also would like to thank the staff at American Home Care and Hearth Hospice for their love and care given to Johanna.
She is survived by several cousins.
The family will receive friends from 11 am to 12 pm (noon) on Saturday, December 3, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
Services for Johanna will follow at 12 pm on Saturday, at the North Chapel with her cousin Reverend Grady Ashley officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
