Leon Hicks, 99, of Ooltewah, TN passed away on July 8, 2026. He was born to the late Robert Taylor Hicks and Lillian Yarbrough Hicks. A graduate of Central High School, Leon joined the Navy at age 17 and served in World War II as a Flagman on the Destroyer Escort.
He was employed by the United States Postal Service and retired after 31 years of service. He and his wife Nancy were members of Spring City United Methodist Church, and enjoyed square dancing, boating, and doing volunteer work, having logged over 10,000 hours with Bicentennial Volunteers Inc.
Leon was an avid Alpine skier. He and Nancy, and at times family members, spent many vacations skiing in the western states, Canada and Austria.
After moving to Ooltewah at age 93, Leon still played golf and enjoyed taking his great grandkids and friends for rides in his golf cart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, Bart Hicks.
Leon is survived by his wife of 72 years, Nancy Walden Hicks; his children, Linda Scruggs, Bob (Diane) Hicks, and Gary Nelson.
He also survives his grandchildren, Summer (Shawn) Elliott, Shea (Bonny) Scruggs, Greg (Denise) Nelson, Colby (Lauren) Nelson, and Jessi (Michael) Cowan; his great-grandchildren, Maddyn, Max, Maci, Rhett, Jordan, Chole, Eli, Conner, Daniel, Casey, and Camille; and his beloved nieces and nephews.
Leon was doing what he loved, playing golf, when it happened and was with his buddies, Pete Severin and Lowell Lawson.
You can see his ball with his name displayed at the Ooltewah Club.
We are thrilled to know he is with Jesus, Bart, Jordan, family and friends.
It was Leon’s wish that there would be No Services.
If you want to honor Leon, please tell someone about Jesus and do something kind for someone. He would love that!
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory, and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
