

Martha Everhart Butterfield died August 06 of 2026. She was born on December 8, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio to Harold S. and Bertha Baker Everhart. She graduated from North High School and the Ohio State University with a B.S. and M.S in Nursing.
She worked at the Ohio State University Hospital and then joined the faculty at Riverside-White Cross School of Nursing (now affiliated with Ohio Wesleyan University).
She moved to Chattanooga in 1967 with her husband, Rev. Dr. William Butterfield. She joined the faculty of the Baroness Erlanger Hospital School of Nursing and was there until 1974 when she became the first faculty member of the newly established UT Chattanooga School of Nursing.
She was predeceased by her husband Bill, her parents and her sister Charlotte. Martha is survived by her sons, Richard, and Daniel (Debbie); her grandsons, Colby (Camillia), and Christofer (Candice), great-grand daughters Quinn, Clio and Oleda, and several cousins and Bill's nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the UC Foundation for the Martha Butterfield Graduate Nursing Scholarship or the Willam Butterfield Fund for Classroom Management.
The family will have a celebration of Martha’s life at a later date.
