Mary Florence Jackson, a long time resident of Signal Mountain, passed away Thursday, July 13, just a few days before her one hundredth birthday. She was born to J. I. and Maude West in Pineville, Kentucky. She always kept a deep affection for her hometown, and talked about Pineville often.
She retired from the Hamilton County school system as an elementary school teacher, after beginning her career teaching in small schools in eastern Kentucky. She had many happy memories of her teaching days and nothing delighted her more than encountering a former student.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Jackson, to whom she had been married for over sixty years at the time of his death in 2010, and a brother, Dr. Bob West.
She is survived by her son Steve Jackson and his wife Sarah; her grandchildren Karen Smith and her husband Matt, and Thomas Jackson; great-grandchildren Brieland and Dansby Smith; and two nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all the people at Alexian's Live At Home program who allowed her to remain in the home she loved until just three weeks before her passing, and Alexian Health Care, who took care of her in her final days.
Funeral services will be held at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church at 11:00 on Thursday, July 20, with The Reverend Derrick Hill officiating. Burial will follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday at Chattanooga Funeral North Chapel, and for one hour before the service at the church.
