Mercer Sanford Thomas, Sr. 87, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2011 in Chattanooga, TN. He was formerly of Birmingham and Gadsden, Alabama and retired as owner of John Thomas Ford of Gadsden. Mr. Thomas later worked in wholesale grocery and food services in Birmingham. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was a member of St. Bede’s Anglican Church in Birmingham. Mr. Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Sowell Thomas.
Survivors include his daughter, Katherine Thomas Brunson and her husband, C. Michael of Chattanooga; son, Mercer Sanford Thomas, Jr. and his wife, Mary Ruth of Birmingham, AL; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
There will be a private memorial service.
