Doctor Paul E. Hawkins

Paul served his country for several years in the United States Army and used the GI Bill to go to college. He received his BS in pharmacy from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Medical College of Georgia and after a year of residency in Panama, he began his practice in Chattanooga in 1962.

During the course of his medical career he held many offices in the local and state medical societies.

Dr. Hawkins was a charter member of Hixson Presbyterian Church. He served as elder for many years, teaching Sunday school and preaching sermons. He went on several medical mission trips to Ecuador South America and to Kenya Africa.

Dr. Hawkins loved building things. He built a three story barn in his back yard that won a Silver hammer Award from Mechanics Illustrated.

He was a life-long fan of the Atlanta Braves, attending spring training and as many games as he could. Whenever the Braves were on TV that is what he watched.

Dr. Hawkins loved Bethel Bible Village and devoted many hours to this charity. He also was an expert in Trivia. We would have marathon games of trivial pursuit and he tried out for Jeopardy once but did not make the final cut.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David Jackson Hawkins and Martha Long Hawkins; his wife, Barbara Ann Hawkins, Daughter, Rebecca Hawkins.

Dr. Hawkins was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, loved by many and he will be truly missed.

Paul is survived by his daughter, Susan Moore and her husband John; and a son, Phillip Hawkins and his wife Kay; grandchildren, Claire and Drew Hawkins and Luke and Caroline Moore; sisters, Kathy Conner and Judith Hawkins; brother, Jack Hawkins;

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the North Chapel.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 29, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Burial will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
