Pierpont Harvard Morgan was born in December of 1934 to Ethel and John Pierpont (JP) Morgan of Signal Mountain. His sister Joan welcomed him and they truly formed a lifelong bond that endured until his passing on September 13, 2021.
At age 12, Pier found his passion for the game of golf with his friends at the Signal Mountain Country Club. From caddy to talented player, his formative years were mostly spent honing his skill playing with some of the best young players this area has ever known.
Mr. Morgan attended The Baylor School from his 9th grade year through graduation, class of 1952. He went on to be recruited for the first men’s golf team at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. He later returned to Chattanooga to finish his degree at UTC where his stellar game earned him a place in the hall of fame. He had 18 lifetime hole in ones to his credit at his passing.
After college, Pier served two years in the US Army on the Army golf team. At discharge he moved to Nashville, took a job as an assistant pro at Belle Meade Country Club and later Equitable Life Insurance. He met and married his first wife, Jacqueline, and together they had four children; Vanessa, Pier Jr, Patrick, and Christopher.
In 1973, Pier returned to Chattanooga where he married his second wife, Carolyn. The two of them resided in Red Bank. Carolyn passed away in 2006, and Mr. Morgan remained in the home they shared until earlier this year.
Pier Morgan will be remembered as a sharp dresser, a friendly spirit, and competitive athlete. He will be hailed for his sweet natural golf swing, his silly grandpa jokes, his character and his love for his family. To us he was Dad and Grampa, and we will miss him terribly. He is survived by his children; Vanessa Grimes (Jimmy), Patrick Morgan (Paige), Christopher Morgan (Gretchen), Nine Grandchildren; Jacqueline Selby (Logan), Victoria Pitts, Alicia Morgan, Richard Morgan, Tanner Morgan, Lillian Morgan, Brenden Morgan, Graham Morgan, Mackenzie Morgan, two step-granddaughters; Mackenzie and Sydney Grimes, his sister Mrs. Joan Mears of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina and her sons Jim Mears (Sandy) and Richard Mears (Dianna).
The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1 pm on Tuesday, September 21, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Pier’s life will follow at 1 pm on Tuesday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
